Infrared Photography at Dubai Expo 2020
We don’t go anywhere without our cameras, and Dubai Expo 2020 was no exception. This time, however, I decided to also grab my IR camera and see what I can do there. It was definitely a fun and captivating way of interacting with the architecture and greenery there.
What I find particularly fascinating is that infrared photography allows us to see mundane objects rendered differently because it captures a spectrum of light that is below visible light.
I have always been interested in IR photography and began exploring as soon as I received my first IR camera as a birthday gift from Amani AlShaali years back. The gift came at first because I have always been fascinated by trees and I find that infrared photography is particularly suited to green spaces because of the way different types of plants radiate and reflect infrared light.
However, I then was inspired to shoot urban spaces and was taken aback by how differently these spaces appear when photographed using this technology.
To me, infrared photography is a way of capturing the essence of something in a different light, one that cannot be seen by the naked eye nor by a normal camera. IR photography is simply to me an opportunity to grow and develop further skills, to grasp different nuances, and perhaps gain new perspectives.
